As a child we were always encouraged to 'give something up' and compared our efforts with each other as some sort of game really. <BR/><BR/>Only recently I read that we often regard the aspect of self denial as some form of personal spring cleaning successful or not through our own efforts - only then to read, that we can only achieve our goal through the continual help of Our Lord - so rather than us doing something for God, He in fact is the 'doer' for us and only with His help will we achieve our Lenten observance.
